It all began with a trip to Annecy in France on my way skiing in December 2011 where I was amazed by these driftwood trees that occupied every shop doorway or window. They were so unique and beautiful I was intrigued to how they had been made.
Throughout the preceding week my mind was full of ideas and designs that I couldn't wait to try out.
I had always been creative and liked to make many things around the house and garden and so this new project was one I couldn't wait to get stuck into.
Upon returning home after the holiday, I began to collect driftwood pieces and chunks of wood that could be used as a base for the tree; and the driftwood trees began to take shape. Many of the driftwood pieces I bleached to get the desired look I was after and although it took a lot of experimenting to get my vision exactly right, it was a truly enjoyable experience.
It is a process that takes time and effort and the planning and thinking that goes into the construction adds to the design feature of the end product.
This is a craft that has swept the nation, such designers as Karen Miller have taken it upon themselves to create these magical unique pieces of art and have been blown away by the response from their customers. They are currently unavailable due to the vast demand for these driftwood trees and the time and effort that is required.
These trees could be used all year round; decorated accordingly at Christmas, Easter, Birthdays, Weddings, Christenings, Thanks-givings, Valentines Day, Anniversaries and many more. The list is endless. How about even using it as a jewellery stand?
So we end up with a tree that began life as a tree and for a variety of reasons had ended up as driftwood. I hope that you enjoy the photos enough to want one for your home, shop, business etc. They can be made to order and I can be contacted on the following e-mail address:
